4 months!

When we first started our twin journey once the girls were born other twin moms would say..."If you can just make it until 4 months you'll be okay." or "Once you get past the 3 month mark things get easier...." WE MADE IT! Now...no it has not gotten miraculously easier nor do I think it ever will. You trade one thing for another each passing week....like now they eat great 95% of the time but they are terrible nappers. Or they are more awake and fun...but they can also throw a mean crying fit now too and with every passing week they get louder and louder. I think that is just parenthood. Having kids teaches you so much about patience, teamwork (this one is huge for Matt and I), compassion, and humility. (You can't ever be too high on your horse when you have had baby poop shot onto your face at 6am....true story.) Bottom line we love these little girls like crazy...when they laugh or smile I know I have done something right and I don't care what else I do in this life as long as these girls are happy and healthy.

Sloan: You are a sincerely happy girl, you wake up smiling and you sometimes go to bed smiling. In the middle of night even though you wake us up crying....as soon as you know you are about to get fed you switch from crying to smiling and cooing. You can roll over now from tummy to back and are working on from back to tummy but you can go from your back to your side very easily and this is how you prefer to sleep. You are even more in love with your hands than last month and since we have broken you of the swaddle you can calm yourself back down at night by sucking on your hands. You are still our cry yourself to sleep baby, even though you are exhausted you cry for about 5-8 minutes every night to get yourself to sleep. You do this at nap time too and we have come to realize its just how you put yourself to sleep. You are a terrible napper.....you would rather be held and rocked, or be awake and play. The problem my dear is you can't really stand to be awake for more than 1.5 hours at this point in your little life so we end up doing anything and everything to get you to take a nap so that you don't become overtired. If I can get a 1 hour nap out of you between meals it is a miracle. The best part about this past month is you started laughing...and it is one of the best sounds I've ever heard. You love your mirrors still but you have mostly laughed at the Lamaze peacock and at me and dad. You love for us to hold you under your arms so you can pretend to stand like a big girl.

Riley: When people say the expression "Your whole face lights up" they must be referring to you when you smile, you crinkle your nose and squint your eyes and use every part of your face to portray the sweetest toothless grin I've ever seen. You are such a happy and for the most part laid back baby. You are a good eater and still get so excited for meal time. You love to play on your activity mat and kick your feet so hard you are stomping on those piano keys. You aren't too crazy about tummy time...you can roll over but you don't do it often and when we put you on your back you just stay that way, you like to sleep flat on your back with your arms reached out above your head. We bought you a Johnny Jump up that hangs over the door and I think once you get the hang of it you are going to love it since you love to kick your legs and move your feet. You are for the most part a very happy girl, you love your milk and you love your sleep. You are a far better napper than sister and she usually wakes you up during the day but at night luckily you sleep right thru her antics. She is normally the one who wakes us up on the monitor so of course we wake you up to eat right along side her, maybe one night I'll get brave and not wake you to see if you can make it all night. You have before so I know you can do it again.

Right now a typical day goes like this:

7am: I wake you both up to eat, I bring you into my bed and BF you at the same time and then we head downstairs.

7:30am-8:30amish: You both play or do tummy time.

8:30amish: 1st nap lasting anywhere from 30mins to 1.5 hours

10:30am: 1st bottle of the day usually consisting of 6-7 ounces

11:00am-11:30amish: playtime, swing, or bumbo

11:30amish-1:00pmish: nap (becoming more difficult)

1:30pm: 2nd bottle 6-7 ounces

2:00pm-2:45ish: play, walk, tummy time

2:45pmish-4:00pm: Nap (never actually happens like this)

4:30pm: I BF you both again for anywhere from 10-20 minutes depending on how distracted you are but you seem to get a full feeding in a lot faster these days.

5:00pm-7:00pm: you usually take a quick catnap 20-45mins, cry, fuss, play, Facetime with anyone who wants to hear you cry..

7:15pm-7:30pm: Last bottle before bed consisting of 8 ounces and then we read a few books and its lights out!

Anywhere from 2am-5am: you wake up to eat, we do this in the dark, we don't talk too much and we keep it very quick and boring in the hopes you will both grow out of this or just sleep right thru which you have a few times. (The last 2 weeks though Weeks 15-17 have been not so great as in you are waking up closer to 2am than the 5am we were.......not sure why we are headed backwards but at this point Matt and I choose to just roll with the punches....)

Likes: You both love the activity mat we have two one with a piano attached to kick your feet against and one with lots of toys hanging down and it also lights up. You both still love a mirror....its hilarious to watch. Ceiling fans catch your eye still but not like last month. Peek a boo, having raspberries blown on your tummies, and when we hold you up so you can pretend to stand. You both still love the ergo carrier and we have used the Moby wrap a few times this month too.

Dislikes: evening (WHEN DOES THIS END?), being left alone for more than a few minutes,  getting out of the bathtub, wind

4 month appointment update: We had your doctor appointment this morning and overall you are both healthy growing girls. The doctor was amazed we are still all breast milk and applauded me which gives me motivation to keep going it is a labor of love making milk for you two but it's the best for you and I want to give you both the best of everything. The only negative from the appointment is that we have to go see a Doc band specialist since Sloan your head doesn't seem to be rounding out on it's own and Riley you still have a flat spot she was slightly concerned about. It is nothing serious to worry about and I know lots of kids these days wear doc bands for a few weeks or months. If this is our fate then we are going to bedazzle the heck out of these helmets and strut our stuff.

I haven't gotten a chance to take pictures with our 4 month stickers yet....but I'll work on that this weekend. Until then here are some poor quality iphone pics :)
